Princess Aiko is a royal of near-unmatched popularity, not just in her home nation of Japan (where manga calling for her accession to the Chrysanthemum throne have been surreptitiously circulated around the national legislature) but also in the eyes of the world’s royal watchers, who have long appreciated the grace and elegance with which the 23-year-old conducts herself. In recent months, they have been granted more and more opportunities to see the Princess, including a state dinner debut in March, and her solo outing this week was no exception to the rule.
The much-loved daughter of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako enjoyed an afternoon of traditional music on 27 April, as she attended a concert held by the Imperial Household’s Music Department at Tokyo’s Imperial Palace. Dressed in a matching silk blazer and skirt in pale pink, Aiko exuded a quiet confidence as she listened to kangen and bugaku performances (orchestral music and music accompanied by dance).
The young royal paired her look with a pearl necklace and a subtle pearl brooch, taking her seat on the palace balcony for a performance of gagaku, which translates as ‘elegant music’. Dating back to the 10th century, the genre has historically been performed at court for the Japanese Imperial Family (who have ruled over the nation for over a millennium). So integral is the music to Japanese culture that UNESCO have designated it a piece of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
